Fire Certification Boards

Understanding Certification Boards

For assurance that fire fighting equipment will work effectively, ensuring the compliance of recognised bodies is essential. Below is a brief overview of some of the key certification boards.

LPCB – Loss Prevention Certification Board

Loss Prevention Certification Board is a certification board of BRE Global relating to fire fighting products. Working within industry and government for more than 100 years, they have set the standards necessary to ensure that fire and security products and services work effectively.

Grundfos continually review their product portfolio to increase their approved range. Grundfos are also a part of recognised associations (ie BAFSA – British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association) and regularly attend meetings to ensure standards are adhered to and up-to-date with the latest technology available.

NFPA – National Fire Protection Association

The mission of the international nonprofit NFPA, that was established in 1896, is to reduce the worldwide burden of fire and other hazards on the quality of life by providing and advocating consensus codes and standards, research, training, and education.

The world's leading advocate of fire prevention and an authoritative source on public safety, NFPA develops, publishes, and disseminates more than 300 consensus codes and standards intended to minimise the possibility and effects of fire and other risks.

NFPA membership totals more than 70,000 around the world.

We are proud to have Timothy Killon from our Grundfos Peerless operation in the USA sitting on the committee of the NFPA 20 standard (Standard for the Installation of Stationary Pumps for Fire Protection). This standard provides the backbone for the installation of FM Approved and UL Listed products.

FM – Factory Mutual

FM Global provides comprehensive global commercial and industrial property insurance, engineering-driven underwriting and risk management solutions, groundbreaking property loss prevention research and prompt, professional claims handling. As a mutual company, Grundfos products and services directly support our clients' overall risk management objectives through:

  • Understanding the nature and reality of their specific risks
  • Establishing sound loss prevention solutions that safeguard against loss
  • Developing cost-effective insurance and risk transfer solutions backed by large, stable capacity
  • Providing the claims and loss mitigation support to minimise business disruption

UL – Underwriters Laboratory

UL is a global independent safety science company offering expertise across five key strategic businesses: product safety, environment, life & health, university and verification services.

Each standard has individual selection criteria and are not interchangeable with one another. Please note that only the sprinkler market currently has standards which require approved products. Other installations, such as (Hydrants or Water-mist) have compliance only requirements.

Understanding Approved Products Selection Criterion

LPCB – Loss Prevention Certification Board

Grundfos LPCB accreditation covers the requirements of Ordinary and High Hazard systems within this BSEN12845 standard. We can supply diesel and/or electric pumps with all the necessary control switchgear and accessories. This range covers pumps that deliver 900 l/min to 10,500 l/min and from 1.2 bar to 12 bar.

NFPA – National Fire Protection Association (Sprinklers)

Unlike LPCB selections, NFPA systems are predominantly based on hydraulically calculating the duty requirements of the selected building. This is then used to select a product approved to a predefined duty parameter, with required FM or UL approvals as necessary.

Grundfos FM/UL accreditation covers the requirements of systems within this NFPA20 standard. We can supply diesel and/or electric pumps with all the necessary control switchgear and accessories. Grundfos has a full range of FM / UL listed & approved products for fire fighting applications.
